Basic Function

The Orthodontist prevents, diagnoses and corrects deviations from normal that occur in growth, development, and position of teeth and other dento-facial structures. Instigates myofacial therapy and advises on serial extraction of dental units in preventive orthodontics. As an orthodontist, the incumbent serves as liaison and consultant to the Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare and has the final authority, within the Dental Division, in regard to all matters mentioned above.

Scope

The Orthodontist will work in the Dental Service of Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare and will be involved in the orthodontic requirements of all Aramco and Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare employees, dependents and any other patients eligible for treatment within the Saudi Aramco guidelines.  Presently these services are provided by three orthodontists in Dhahran, one in Abqaiq and one in Ras Tanura. The physical delivery system presently includes seven dental clinics and one inpatient hospital. Approximately $500,000 are generated in dental fees annually. Supervision is from the Chief of Specialty Dental Services on administrative matters, functional problems related to forecasting and future service requirements.

Principal Contacts

Daily with all levels of employees or their dependents and approved general public patients in conducting the duties as outlined below. Contact necessary with the Chief of Dental Services, Unit Head of Specialty Dental Services, dental staff and technical personnel to coordinate all functions or as a consultant frequent contact with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons regarding orthognathic surgical cases.  Occasional contact with American and European orthodontists, local dentists regarding referral and continuation of cases under treatment and manufacturer or vendor representatives regarding orthodontic equipment and supplies.

Principal Duties

Practices diagnostic, preventive, remedial orthodontic service for patients of all ages.

  1. Works as part of the orthognathic surgical team to correct facial deformities, best treated by this advanced treatment modality involving orthodontics & maxillofacial surgery.
  2. Advises on the occlusion of teeth during treatment of facial fractures. Studies and recommends changes in the occlusion of patients undergoing periodontal treatment, to remove all possible causes of the condition resulting from mechanical interference. Advises the dentist regarding difficulty occlusion problems in the construction of prosthetic appliances. He participates actively in the treatment of these cases.
  3. Serves as a consultant to the pediatric service on problems relating to growth patterns and syndromes in newborn and small children. Serves as consultant to the surgical service in cleft palate and lip rehabilitation. He participates actively in the treatment of these cases.
  4. Records all pertinent data in medical and dental records accurately and promptly, indicating thereon the chief complaint, diagnosis, treatment administered and recommendations for further action. Records periodically in the patient's chart the progress and problems related to the case.
  5. Makes recommendations regarding revision and alterations of orthodontic fee schedule and keeps statistical analysis of workloads.
  6. Keeps current with new techniques/procedures in the practice of orthodontics, recommends implements as approved.
  7. Performs miscellaneous related duties as requested by the Chief, Specialty Dental Svcs.
  8. Prepares and delivers orthodontic materials for Saudi Arab Dental Students.
  9. Responsible for the proper practice of infection control guidelines in all clinical areas.
  10. Designs, fabricates or directs the fabrication of intra and extra oral orthodontic appliances, particularly advanced interceptive and functional appliances.
  11. Keeps current with emergency techniques as they emerge and evolve.
  12. Active participation and sustained qualification in all cardio- pulmonary resuscitation programs.

Experience

Five (5) years practice in orthodontics and qualified in the use of orthodontic techniques such as Begg Light Wire, Edgewise and Extra- Oral Force, to adequately treat transfer cases (two year residency can be included).

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

  • Excellent command of oral and written English.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical ethics;
