Basic Function

Performs all diagnostic tests done in the eye clinic related to eye tissue recovery for transplant and research use from donors as per standard operating procedures and guidelines of Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare.

Scope

Carries out diagnostic procedures utilizing the specialized equipment assigned to him/her.  Is responsible for maintaining the equipment in good working conditions at all times.  Performing duties within regular working hours and beyond if required.  Participates in the on job training and orientation of subordinates i.e. Eye Bank Technician and Senior Eye Bank Technician.  The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Physician Manager, Ophthalmology Unit.

Principal Contacts

Has daily interactions with all eye clinic staff to include:  Physicians, Nurses, Ophthalmic Technicians, Optometrists and front liners such as receptionists and schedulers.

Principal Duties

  1. Secure Human donor tissues for the patient transplants either from International Eye Banks or from local donors.
  2. If applicable, Recover eye tissue from Local tissue donors for transplant and research purposes, including drawing blood samples for serological testing.
  3. Perform donor medical history reviews and physical assessments including gross evaluation of ocular tissues of local donors.
  4. Re-evaluate the donor medical history and tissue evaluation for all tissues imported from International Eye Banks to ensure its suitability and safety.
  5. Maintain an updated waiting list for patients need eye tissues transplants.
  6. Interact with physicians and hospital staff in a professional manner.
  7. Maintain and preserve the donor tissues at the appropriate temperature until dispensing for surgery.
  8. Perform facility cleaning and equipment maintenance as required.
  9. Training new technician and prepare them for certification.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a Life Sciences, preferred Biochemistry or applied Medical Sciences Medical (Laboratories).

Experience

Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the field.

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

  • Eye Bank Technician Certificate from the Eye Bank Association of America is required.
  • Fluent in English, reading, writing and speaking skills is a must.
  • Preferable skills in technical writing.
  • Ability to use computer applications such as Excel and Excess.
