Basic Function

Provides supervision and direction for the total management of assigned unit/clinic. Coordinates and manages activities of assigned unit/clinic and assumes overall 24- hour responsibility.

 

Scope

Incumbent has the responsibility and accountability for the management of a unit/clinic with a complex patient population. Broad areas of responsibility are related to the administrative and clinical aspects of assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, organizing, directing, controlling, and coordinating patient care specific patient population to assure quality care within established standards. Deals with many different medical and multi diagnoses needs of patients, problem solves, and makes management decisions based on managerial and clinical skills for assigned area. Receives supervision from the respective Director/Senior Director.

Work is performed routinely within normal working hours, may be required to work outside regular hours as need arises.

Principal Contacts

INTERNAL: Daily contact with unit Personnel, and nursing & clinical services Managers, and other Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) health care personnel involved in care of the patient.

 EXTERNAL: Frequent contact with departments responsible for concerns relating to employees, patients and families (i.e., JHAH, Human Resources (HR) & Government Affairs).

Principal Duties

Performs all duties of the subordinates plus the following:

A. PATIENT CARE:

  • Adapts unit/clinic plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges
  • Guided by policies, resource requirements, budgets and the business plan.
  • May perform some of the tasks that requires his/her knowledge and expertise, but in general he/she supervises implementation. 
  • Ensures care activities are delegated appropriately according to the level of staff education, knowledge, skills and abilities and in accordance to the patients' needs and acuity.
  • Evaluates care and documentation through daily unit/clinic rounds and ongoing observation of patient care and unit operations and makes changes in practice based on clinical judgment and evidence based practice.
  • Initiates corrective action as appropriate with support from  Management and JHAH, HR

B. MANAGEMENT OF UNIT/CLINIC:

  • Applies in-depth understanding of how own unit/clinic integrates within the department’s initiative.
  • Manages one or more homogeneous teams across a single unit/clinic
  • Adapts plans and priorities to meet service and/or operational challenges.
  • Identifies and resolve day-to-day technical and operational problems under general guidance.
  • Provides input into budget forecasting and manages resources within allocated budget.
  • Performs the management functions common to the unit/clinic level as established by JHAH Management.
  • Oversees the schedule to ensure staffing needs are met and conforms to JHAH timekeeping guidelines. Responds to changes in census and acuity, and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Approves, and maintains staffing patterns to accommodate patient care, unit activities, and employee needs.
  • Adheres to Government, JHAH and Nursing and Clinical Services Department policies.
  • Implements, directs and monitors the unit's ongoing Quality Assessment, patient satisfaction, staff engagement, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and improvement activities within the guidelines and standards of Nursing & Clinical Services.
  • Utilizes and fosters effective communication and positive collegial relationships among the multidisciplinary health care team and with other departments.
  • Ensures a safe environment and safe work practices in conformance with fire and safety regulations through staff education and participation in safety awareness and activities.
  • Participates in the short and long-range planning for and development of the patient care unit.
  • Investigates and responds to patient/family/employee complaints and takes appropriate action.
  • Collaborates with the Nursing & Clinical Services Shift Coordinator to arrange for referral/repatriation of patients.
  • Responsible for ordering high-cost budget equipment and accountable for equipment inventory.
  • Maintains a Specialty Manual for the unit in coordination with the Specialists assigned to the unit.

C. MANAGEMENT OF STAFF:

  • People management responsibilities include conducting performance appraisals, and managing people.
  • Contributes to hiring/firing.
  • Acts as a positive role model and exhibits leadership by practicing the highest standards in conduct in accordance with the professional nursing code of conduct
  • Determines specific professional development needs of employees, plans programs and coordinates with Clinical Practice and Education department to provide opportunities to ensure needs are met. Acts as mentor to the charge nurse for the development of effective management skills.
  • Assures all staff members receive appropriate orientation to the unit and hospital, in addition to their JHAH orientation.
  • Holds staff meetings to keep staff informed of departmental issues and new policies and procedures.
  • Elicits participation of staff in quality improvement opportunities and implements problem solving at the unit level and ensure feedback from staff on problems.
  • Maintains unit's disaster and fire preparedness and ensures all staff are knowledgeable and competent in the related procedures.

D. PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Participates in department/JHAH committees, taskforces or significant interest groups to identify quality improvement opportunities and to develop new or revised current policy and procedures.
  • Assumes accountability for own professional growth, maintains current in chosen profession
  • Assumes other management roles when operational needs arise.

 

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing/Speciality and advanced training /certification in specialty.
  • Master's preferred.

Experience

7 years minimum clinical experience post-registration with three years of management experience in clinical specialty.

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

  • Current licensure as a professional registered nurse. 
  • Fluent spoken and written English. Spoken Arabic is desirable.
  • Professional experience with demonstrated competency in clinical management and leadership skills.
  • The ability to establish positive working relationships with all health care members in a multinational setting.
