Basic Function

Performs activities of direct and indirect nursing care functions to patients under the supervision of a professional nurse.  Accepts delegation from the professional nurse in meeting the learning/information needs of the patient/family.

Functions using the Nursing Process with emphasis on direct patient care and related activities and referring to the Lippincott Manual and Mosby Competencies.

 

Scope

The work is in Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Nursing department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Ras Tanura, and Abqaiq. Work is performed on any shift as required in the inpatient units, operating rooms, emergency room and clinics of the Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Organization.

 

The Senior Practical Nurse, under the supervision of a professional nurse, provides direct and indirect nursing care to sub-acute, convalescent and chronically ill patients. Assists the professional nurse in providing nursing care to patients with complex nursing needs. Assists the nurse midwife in the care of patients in labor and delivery, and during the post-partum period. Processes ambulatory patients presenting to the clinic.

Work hours are assigned to meet operational needs. Hours may include on call and scheduled overtime.

Direction is through the unit manager.

Principal Contacts

Daily with patients, families and visitors; members of the medical and nursing staff and support services personnel.

Ongoing with JHAH managers.

Occasional public and community contact through communicating policy changes, revisions, and/or introduction of new work rules.

Principal Duties

1) ASSESSMENT:

  • Measures and records vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight, utilizing manual and electronic devices.
  • Observes patients for changes in condition, reaction to medications and treatments and reports same to professional nurse.
  • Measures and records fluid intake and output.

 

2) PLANNING:

  • Assists the professional nurse in collaborating with the patient/family and other members of the health care team to develop and update a plan of care that is consistent with the medical diagnosis and based on the patient's changing physical, psychosocial and age related requirements.
  • Organizes patient care activities on a daily basis and establishes priorities to give basic care to assigned patients.

 

3) IMPLEMENTATION/INTERVENTIONS:

  • Provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients consistent with the plan of care and needs of patients with respect for the patient's privacy, dignity, personal preference and culture.
  • Contributes to the well-being of patients by meeting hygiene needs and providing a safe therapeutic environment.
  • Assists physicians/patients with the physical examinations/tests and diagnostic procedures.  Acts as a chaperone for female patients with male physicians when applicable.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Completes patient identification verification process as required.
  • Acts as a translator (if applicable).
  • Teaches and counsels patients regarding health practices and preventive measures.
  • Recognizes the need for emergency care and initiates resuscitative measures in life threatening situations.
  • Assists with unit specific treatments requirements and collects specimens, i.e., urine, stool, and sputum as requested.
  • Documents unit specific nursing observations accurately.
  • Receives patient care information from registered nurses and other healthcare professionals and reports the information to the appropriate person
  • Following completion of medication administration competency may administer medications by sub cutaneous, intramuscular, oral and topical routes including medications that are absorbed through mucous membranes, such as nasal, inhaled, ear, eyes and nose drops. Is knowledgeable of therapeutic effects, usual dosages, contraindications, side effects and adverse reactions for all drugs administered.

4) EVALUATION:

  • Evaluates quality of nursing care delivered and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluates on an ongoing basis the patient’s progress and reports changes to the professional nurse.
  • Assists the professional nurse to evaluate the patient/family understanding of and response to the plan of care, including teaching and discharge plans.
  • Assists the registered nurse to evaluate the patient/family/caregiver understanding of all discharge medications instructions and the importance of the patient compliance with the prescribed drugs.

 

5) PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Practices within the established standards, policies and procedures of JHAH.
  • Recognizes when patient care needs extend beyond the limits of personal ability and consults the professional nurse supervising her/ his activities.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and maintains current license in nursing.
  • Treats clients (visitors, patients, nurses, and all other employees) with courtesy, respect and caring behaviors.
  • Always answers a patients call light/bell even if it is not an assigned patient and always takes the initiative to assist the patient.
  • Knows and organizes work around the needs of assigned patients without a reminder to do so by the charge nurse, i.e. patients requiring turning, feeding, etc.
  • Presents a positive image of JHAH through professional appearance and behavior.
  • Maintains confidentiality by choosing the appropriate persons, time and place for patient related discussions.
  • Takes appropriate and timely action upon noticing a problem and immediately brings abnormal findings to the attention of the assigned registered nurse.
  • Provides comfort measures during procedure if chaperoning, and always cleans area after procedure.
  • Assures patient comfort and dignity measures during transport.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and orderly environment by keeping unit clean and disposing of soiled, contaminated items appropriately.
  • Tags, reports and removes broken equipment from service and delivers to repair area.
  • Frequently checks for and reads all communication/minutes.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and maintains currency in nursing for area of practice.
  • Maintains infection control and safety awareness, functions
  • Participates in fire and disaster drills and mock codes.
  • Demonstrates acceptance, caring and empathy to patients and families.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patient/family information.
  • Uses verbal and nonverbal communication that conveys respect for the patient/family/visitor/staff.
  • Complies with the department dress code.
  • Reports to work on time.

Education

Completion of 12th grade high school and a 2 years health institute nurse diploma program which has been recognized by the Saudi Commission and current licensure as a Nurse Technician.

Experience

5 years’ minimum experience.

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

Spoken and written English is required, Arabic preferred.
