Basic Function
Independent practitioner who performs a wide range of direct and complex physical examination, customizes treatment plans, and administers therapy for specialist caseload requiring advanced critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. Practices within complex and increasingly unpredictable contexts
Functions as a preceptor and role model for new hires and others as required. Acts as resource to staff dealing with patients who present with complex needs. When orientate can manage clinical team with support and guidance. Demonstrates effective collaboration and team behaviors. May participate in research activities.
. Influences: client on caseload, colleague’s, multi/interdisciplinary team. Provides mentorship delegation and supervision of junior staff, support workers, interns and summer students and volunteers. Responsible for own actions, practice according to professional codes JHAH, JCI policies and procedures.
Scope
Practices within John Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Nursing & Clinical Services Department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Udhailiyah, Ras Tanura and Abqaiq according to professional codes and defined organizational policies and procedures.
The Senior Physical Therapist provides complex professional therapy services within increasingly unpredictable contexts, using developed critical reasoning skills, within defined programs, protocols, policies and procedures. Provides work direction, clinical assistance and/or training to less experienced therapists in routine/predictable job tasks, Physical/Occupational Therapy Assistant interns and summer students. Receives supervision and direction from Clinical lead/manager and collaborates with Advanced Physical Therapist, Senior Advanced Physical Therapist. Work hours are assigned to meet operational needs. Hours may include on call and scheduled overtime
Principal Contacts
INTERNAL: Daily with clinical team and support workers to provide clinical support and work direction as required. Daily with manager, Physicians / Surgeons/, nurses and other medical staff members, patient and family members to coordinate the physical therapy and rehabilitation program. Ongoing with current staff and new hires for orientation and clinical support, guidance and integration
EXTERNAL: Occasionally with other company employees during outreach activities and hospital surveys or with outside medical professionals.
Principal Duties
Performs all duties of the Associate Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist and acts as resource for complex cases providing support and guidance as required
ASSESSMENT:
- Acts as a resource to other staff members during the evaluation goal setting and monitoring of complex patient/family needs
- Assists other staff members in improving their knowledge and skills, giving input when needs are identified
- Assesses the need for suitable staff development program/s in assigned clinical area to ensure effective patient care
PLANNING:
- Serves as direct care clinical resource in developing, coordinating and reviewing the patient plan of care
- Providing clinical work direction for clinical team
IMPLEMENTATION/INTERVENTIONS:
- Provides total and direct physical therapy service to adult / pediatric patients requiring advanced, skilled and complex interventions with a variety of illnesses, impairments and disabilities.
- Preforms therapy requiring advanced competency skills or training in the expanded therapy role
- Performs complex patient assessment, establishes functional and measurable goals, and designs a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient and family. Acts as resource
- Provides complex intervention in accordance with the established plan of care. Acts as resource
- Assesses the effectiveness of treatment and modifies treatment to achieve goals. Acts as resource to other staff members with complex cases
- Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, or caregiver and provides education and educational material to meet those needs, documenting intervention in the PTR
- Plans for discharge collaborating with inter/multidisciplinary care team
- Facilitates communication with patient, family, caregivers, and members of the multidisciplinary team to promote maximum benefit from care and rehabilitation.
- Provides ongoing assessment, modifies and implements specialist physiotherapy treatments and programs as required. Acts as resource
- Assists clinicians with the more complex patient assessments, therapeutic interventions and care plans
- Acts as resource when discussing complex cases and their progress with the therapy staff, Physician / Surgeon; recommends changes; advises when the patient is ready for discharge from the therapy program.
- Demonstrates proper treatment procedures to therapy staff ward personnel; instructs patients and families in procedures to be continued at home.

. EVALUATION:
- Acts as a resource to other staff members during the evaluation of complex patient care
- Evaluates the progress of new hire, interns, and other identified staff and gives input to the Educational coordinator, their work director or supervisor
PROFFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
Performs other roles/responsibilities to support the overall effectiveness of the department. These duties may include but not limited to:
- Presents a positive image of JHAH through professional appearance and behavior
- Treats all customers with courtesy, respect and caring behaviors
- Responds to customer concerns in a timely manner i.e. answer bells, assist patients who are lost in the hospital and respond to nurses phone calls
- Maintains confidentiality by choosing the appropriate person, time and place for patient related discussions
- Assures patient comfort and dignity at all times
- Supports unit culture of quality and safety through participation with clinical audits Peer review and supporting research and development activities, coordinating/participating in service/Hazmat/Safety activities. Personnel compliance with organizational safety requirements
- Participates in planning and implementing outreach activities including health exhibitions, MDFD presentations, and lectures to other JHAH staff.
- Represents RSU on committees, special interest groups and task forces as required
- Evaluates patient care supplies/equipment and provides input to clinical leader/supervisor
- Serves as direct clinical resource in the development, review, revision and implementation of policies, procedures, protocols and care standards patient instructions and educational handouts
- Performs and encourages/mentors others to perform evidence based literature searches to answer clinical questions
- Provides patient reports at the request of the Unit Supervisor.
- Participates as needed with on-going training of JHAH and unit staff.
- Undertakes the duties of senior staff as requested.
- Supports unit through coordinating in-service / Hazmat/ Safety activities as indicated
- Participates/conducts clinical audits and development activities
- Keeps abreast of new techniques or equipment and recommends or implements them as applicable.
- Meets professional competency requires for assigned role while continuing to grow and develop professional through self-directed learning, and the job exposure and experience and through mentorship and courses
- Frequently checks for and reads all communication/minutes in a timely manner
- Participates in lifelong learning in accordance with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution recognized by JHAH
- Completion of 1 year clinical internship for professional registration with a current license to practice.
- Professional/clinical knowledge acquired through initial degree supplemented by specialist training, experience in specialist field to postgraduate certificate level or equivalent. Additional years’ experience can be considered in lieu of formal course
Experience
- Five years minimum clinical Physical Therapy experience following licensure/registration in the country of origin.
- Proven professional/clinical experience in specialist field demonstrating the skills, knowledge and experience required to render appropriate services according to sound principles of practice.
- Ability to train and competence check less experienced staff in routine tasks and specialty skills.
- Experience in audits and research activities desired but not essential.
Certifications/Other requirements as applicable
- Specialty training to post graduate certificate level or equivalent and experiences for service provision to in-patient and outpatient Physical Therapy services.
- In addition sufficient experience in an acute-care setting to function with multi-disciplinary teams and be competent in assessing and managing both adult and pediatric patients if needed.
- Fluent spoken and written English. Spoken Arabic desirable.
- Current BLS Certification.
- Computer proficiency required, Microsoft office applications preferred
